Silver-based anti-microbial products are widely used in medical applications. Our product is a nanozeolite based anti-microbial, with controlled release of silver and other co-cations, primarily used in bandages, wound dressings as well as coatings on medical devices and implant materials.
Use of the unique features of the nanozeolite to enhance the silver antimicrobial activity is the transformational aspect of our product. Our antimicrobial product with significantly higher potency will require lower dosages of silver with lower environmental footprint and lower non-bacterial cellular interactions.
Silver is used in coating to prevent biofilm fouling. Our innovation is the use of nanozeolite support, which by chemical modification will enhance the antimicrobial properties of the AgNP via the following:
- Controlled AgNP size
- No ligand coating on Ag
- Release of co-cation (e.g. Zn2+) to enhance Ag activity
- Altering acidity around the zeolite enhancing Ag activity
- Surface modification of nanozeolite to propel it towards bacteria
The use of zeolites in water purification and filtration is wide spread. Our hierarchal zeolites have a low Si/Al ratio with high external and internal surface areas and are excellent cation-exchange agents. In order to improve the selectivity of ion-exchange, we coat the external surface area of the hierarchical zeolite with transition metal oxides, allowing for use of both the external and internal surface.
Depending on the purpose, the external surface of our hierarchical zeolites can be coated with carbon-based adsorbents, thereby removing both organic and inorganic materials/bacteria from water.
Due to the high surface area of our hierarchical zeolite, we can effectively remove acidic gases such as CO2 and SO2 on basic metal oxide modified hierarchical zeolites.
Our adsorbent-modified hierarchical zeolites are also effective for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from the atmosphere. If needed, antimicrobial features can also be readily incorporated into the hierarchical zeolites.
