Small Business Innovation Research Program Provides Seed Funding for R&D
Columbus, OH, February 25, 2019 – ZeoVation has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant for $225,000 to conduct research and development (R&D) work on an antimicrobial agent to combat the proliferation of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Bacterial infections cause much havoc in peoples’ lives. The usual treatment is by antibiotics, but due to antibacterial resistance, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria resistance to antibiotics. Hospital acquired infections (HAI) are on the rise, with 100,000 deaths in the US and costs of $50 billion. And, there are 76 million foodborne illnesses in US annually, resulting in 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,200 deaths.
To address this problem, ZeoVation has developed a controlled release anti-microbial particle with at least a 100-fold higher antimicrobial potency over current zeolite-based antimicrobials and factor of 1,000 over silver colloids. Considering the ease of formulation with this smart particle, the technology will be a game changer in the antimicrobial world.

Once a small business is awarded a Phase I SBIR/STTR grant (up to $225,000), it becomes eligible to apply for a Phase II grant (up to $750,000). Small businesses with Phase II grants are eligible to receive up to $500,000 in additional matching funds with qualifying third-party investment or sales.
NSF accepts Phase I proposals from small businesses twice annually in June and December. Small businesses with innovative science and technology solutions, and commercial potential are encouraged to apply. All proposals submitted to the NSF SBIR/STTR program undergo a rigorous merit-based review process.
